SABINE COUNCIL ON AGING, INC.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
FEBRUARY 24, 2011
Spring is trying to arrive. Since we’ll probably have at least one more cold spell, we’re keeping our sweaters handy, but it’s hard not to get optimistic when we see the flowers blooming and the trees beginning to bud out. It’s time to start thinking about working in the yard and getting the garden ready to plant.
It’s also time to get in shape and get rid of the winter sluggishness that we’ve managed to fall into. With this in mind, the Council on Aging will be offering a Zumba Dance class at 1pm each Tuesday beginning March 1st, at the Legacy Building in Many. The class is free to the public and promises to be a lot of fun.
The staff is busy planning our fifth annual “Volunteer Appreciation Day” which will be held on April 19th. A Beach Party theme is being planned with food, prizes, music and special gifts for our very valuable volunteers. Our volunteers help us with crafts, exercise classes, quilting, seminars and many more activities which help our seniors enjoy the time they spend at the Council. And we’re especially grateful to the members of our Board of Directors and Advisory Council for all the time and energy they give helping us administer this wonderful organization.
January was another busy month at the Council. We served 999 Congregate meals at our meal sites and delivered 3,599 meals to Home Bound seniors. We provided 126 units of homemaker service for our seniors, 127 hours of Caregiver services, and 54 contacts have been made for Outreach, Information & Assistance. We provided 554 units of transportation, 390 units of wellness, and 1,246 units of recreation.
Highlights of February activities included Valentine’s Day parties, Spa Day, Movie Matinee, Book Review, Game Day and special seminars with Superior Hospice and Nutritionist Amie Mitchell. Our quilting groups are growing and trying new things and the Quiddlers are expanding their thinking power with each game played. Some say Jigsaw Puzzles are just what they need to quiet frayed nerves or calm the spirit while providing a rewarding challenge. There is always something fun going on at our Council on Aging centers.
Our spring activities are really shaping up. Be sure to check our March calendar for current events and special activities. A complete calendar, listing all the regularly scheduled activities is available by calling our office 256-4140 or checking out our website ( www.sabinecoa.com ).
Respectfully submitted,
