June 2011
SABINE COUNCIL ON AGING, INC.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
June 23, 2011
The Sabine Council on Aging hosted a very successful Health Fair on Tuesday, June 21st. Approximately 30 vendors brought an abundance of good information to share with our seniors. The Sabine Medical Center was on hand to provide free glucose testing and low cost PSA and Lipid testing. Many area residents took this opportunity to visit our facility and the participating service providers.
On Wednesday, June 22nd, I spoke to students in the Health Occupations Communications class at the Louisiana Technical College. I was able to tell them of the services provided by the Council on Aging and also enlist their help in providing volunteer services. I want to thank Camille Spilker for inviting me to speak to this group and also for offering to send students to volunteer with our seniors on a regular basis.
Our July calendar is filling up rapidly and it looks like it will be another busy month. Our Senior Housing Initiative Consultant, Ms. Carol Fernandez, will be in Many on July 7-8 to discuss beginning our strategic plan. All board members and interested seniors are invited to come meet Ms. Fernandez and ask any questions they have regarding this initiative.
Beverly and I will attend the Louisiana Councils on Aging Directors Association meeting in Lafayette July 19-20. This is a good opportunity to network with other COA Directors to find out what is happening in other parts of our state.
In May we served 1,025 Congregate meals at our meal sites and delivered 4,137 meals to Home Bound seniors. We provided 77 units of homemaker service for our seniors, 211 hours of Caregiver services, and 42 contacts have been made for Outreach, Information & Assistance. We provided 546 units of transportation, 280 units of wellness, and 1,248 units of recreation.
Each Meal Site will be hosting July 4th parties and fun patriotic activities during the month of July. On July 1st the Toledo Center will have an old fashioned Ice Cream Social and the Legacy Building seniors will enjoy Red, White and Blue Bingo. On July 14th, the La Tech College Health Occupations students will conduct EKG’s for area seniors at the Legacy Building. No fee will be charged, but an appointment is recommended.
Be sure to check our July calendar for current events and special activities. A complete calendar, listing all the regularly scheduled activities is available by calling our office 256-4140 or checking out our website (www.sabinecoa.com ).
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Rigsby
