May 2011
SABINE COUNCIL ON AGING, INC.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
MAY 26, 2011
April and May have just flown by. It’s hard for me to believe that summer is upon us already and we haven’t had our spring showers yet! This could be a very hot and dry year. We will begin our annual fan drive on June 1st this year, so if you know a senior in need of a fan, have them call us at 256-4140 to get on the list for a free fan. We will see that seniors (over 60) receive the first fans, then we’ll help as many people as we can.
Beverly and I attended the Louisiana Councils on Aging Directors Association conference in Baton Rouge earlier this month. We were able to meet many of the Louisiana Legislators at the Capitol Building and catch up on the latest legislation concerning seniors. We also honored Mrs. Dathene Brown, who has been the Executive Director of the Webster Council on Aging for 42 years. Mrs. Brown is an inspiration to us all for her strength, stamina and knowledge of the aging network and its needs and possibilities.
Our Zumba classes here at the Legacy Building have evolved from having a certified instructor to using the purchased DVD. We are still getting a good workout and invite all who wish to attend to join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2pm. The Toledo Center also has the Zumba video and has scheduled Zumba classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3pm.
The SCOA 2011 Health Fair is scheduled for June 21st (7:30am until 10:30am) at the Legacy Building. Sabine Medical Center has agreed to attend and is offering Cholesterol, Blood Sugar and PSA tests. Many other vendors are planning to attend as well offering a variety of important information. The Health Fair is open to the public and all area residents are encouraged to attend.
April was a short serving month, but we at the Council we still very busy. In April we served 865 Congregate meals at our meal sites and delivered 3,807 meals to Home Bound seniors. We provided 80 units of homemaker service for our seniors, 219 hours of Caregiver services, and 41 contacts have been made for Outreach, Information & Assistance. We provided 485 units of transportation, 268 units of wellness, and 1,184 units of recreation.
We will be closed Monday, May 30, 2011, in observance of Memorial Day and on June 3, we will have our Food for Seniors distribution at the Legacy Building. Our annual membership drive is underway and our annual Membership Meeting is scheduled for June 23, 2011, at 3pm. This is our opportunity to thank our outgoing Board Members and elect and welcome new ones. Our regular Board Meeting will follow immediately after the annual meeting, then the Advisory Council will hold it’s quarterly meeting. June is the last month of our fiscal year and it looks like it will be a very busy month indeed.
Be sure to check our June calendar for current events and special activities. A complete calendar, listing all the regularly scheduled activities is available by calling our office 256-4140 or checking out our website (www.sabinecoa.com ).
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Rigsby
Executive Director
